Think of a woman we’ll call Adaeze. Every January her church declared twenty-one days of fasting, and every January she joined in with great enthusiasm: no food until 6 p.m., only water.
By day three she was irritable at work. By day six she was snapping at her children. By day nine she quietly gave up, feeling guilty and defeated, and promised herself she would do better next year.
Then someone asked her a simple question: “Why do you fast?” She realised she did not really know. That question is where this book begins.
