Think of a nurse we’ll call Ebiere, who grew up in a river town in the Niger Delta and now lives in London. As a child she was taken to the river for a “washing”. Years later, dreams of dark water and relationships that ended suddenly made her wonder whether the river still had a claim on her.
One pastor called her a “marine girl”. A prophet asked for money. A WhatsApp video made her afraid of her own reflection.
What changed was not a ritual. An older believer opened the Bible to Colossians 2:15 and said, “Before we talk about the river, let us talk about the cross.” Ebiere wrote down what she actually knew, renounced it in Christ with her pastor present, saw her doctor about her sleep and grief, and began to walk free.
