If you wake up at night with a racing heart after a frightening dream, you are not alone, and you do not have to face the night in fear. A prayer against bad dreams is one of the most common requests we receive from Christian women in Nigeria, Ghana and across the diaspora. This guide gives you 20 prayer points with KJV scriptures, a simple bedtime routine, and honest advice on when nightmares need a doctor as well as prayer.
Scripture gives us a calm starting point: “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8). Your safety at night does not depend on how loudly you pray or how many candles you light. It rests on the faithfulness of God.

Why Bad Dreams Trouble So Many Believers
Bad dreams come in many forms: being chased, falling, eating in the dream, seeing dead relatives, drowning, being attacked, or waking up feeling heavy and tired. Some dreams fade by breakfast. Others repeat for weeks and leave you anxious about going to bed.
Many ministers in African churches describe certain recurring dreams as spiritual attacks, especially dreams of an unknown “husband” or sexual dreams that leave a woman drained. If that is your concern, read our guides on spiritual husband in dreams and the biblical meaning of sexual dreams.
At the same time, the Bible itself is balanced. Ecclesiastes 5:3 says that “a dream cometh through the multitude of business”, meaning that many dreams simply reflect a busy, burdened mind. Stress, grief, trauma, late meals, some medicines and poor sleep can all make nightmares worse. Wise believers pray and look after their bodies.
What the Bible Says About Dreams and the Night
God has spoken through dreams (Joseph in Genesis 37 and 41, Daniel in Daniel 2, Joseph the carpenter in Matthew 1). Job 33:15–16 describes God speaking “in a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men”. Even Pilate’s wife said, “I have suffered many things this day in a dream” (Matthew 27:19). So dreams are not meaningless, but not every dream is a message either.
The most important truth is this: the night belongs to God. “Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day” (Psalm 139:12). The One who watches over you “shall neither slumber nor sleep” (Psalm 121:4).
KJV Bible Verses Against Bad Dreams
Read these verses slowly before bed. Many women write one on a card and keep it by the bed so it is the last thing they read at night and the first thing they see in the morning.
- Proverbs 3:24 – “When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.” (read in context)
- Psalm 91:5 – “Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day.”
- Psalm 3:5 – “I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.”
- Psalm 127:2 – “For so he giveth his beloved sleep.”
- Isaiah 26:3 – “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”
- 2 Timothy 1:7 – “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
- John 14:27 – “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you… Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
- Psalm 34:7 – “The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.”

A Simple Bedtime Routine Before You Pray
Prayer is not a magic formula, and a peaceful night usually starts long before your head touches the pillow. Try this routine for two weeks:
- Slow down an hour before bed. Put the phone away, dim the lights and avoid frightening films or arguments late at night.
- Settle the day with God. “Let not the sun go down upon your wrath” (Ephesians 4:26). Forgive, release worries and confess anything that weighs on your conscience.
- Prepare your room. Keep it tidy, cool and quiet. Some families play soft worship music or read a Psalm aloud together.
- Read one verse and meditate. “When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches” (Psalm 63:6).
- Pray the prayer points below, calmly and with faith, not with panic.
- Keep a notebook by the bed. If you wake from a bad dream, write it down briefly, pray a short prayer, and go back to sleep.
The Sleep Foundation offers practical, non-religious sleep hygiene tips that work well alongside prayer.

20 Prayer Points Against Bad Dreams (With Scriptures)
Pray these points in your own words. You can pray all of them at once, or choose three or four each night.
Prayers of Surrender and Peace
- Father, I thank You that You are my keeper and You never sleep. I commit my body, mind and dreams into Your hands tonight (Psalm 121:4).
- Lord Jesus, I come to You weary and heavy laden. Give me the rest You promised (Matthew 11:28).
- I receive Your peace that passes all understanding. Guard my heart and mind through Christ Jesus as I sleep (Philippians 4:6–7).
- I refuse the spirit of fear. God has given me power, love and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).
- Holy Spirit, quiet every anxious thought and every worry I carried from today. Keep my mind stayed on You (Isaiah 26:3).
Prayers of Protection Through the Night
- Lord, I lie down in peace and sleep, for You alone make me dwell in safety (Psalm 4:8).
- I declare that my sleep shall be sweet and I shall not be afraid when I lie down (Proverbs 3:24).
- Father, let Your angels encamp around my home, my bed and my family tonight (Psalm 34:7).
- I shall not be afraid of the terror by night. I dwell in the secret place of the Most High (Psalm 91:1, 5).
- Lord, cover my children and everyone under this roof. Let no frightening dream disturb their rest.
Prayers Against Evil Dreams and Night Attacks
- In the name of Jesus, I reject every evil dream and every image that does not come from God. I cast down imaginations that exalt themselves against the knowledge of God (2 Corinthians 10:5).
- I submit myself to God, I resist the devil, and I believe he must flee from me (James 4:7).
- Jesus has spoiled principalities and powers and triumphed over them. I stand in His victory tonight (Colossians 2:15).
- I overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of my testimony (Revelation 12:11).
- No weapon formed against me shall prosper, in the day or in the night (Isaiah 54:17).
- Lord, You have given me power over all the power of the enemy. Nothing shall by any means hurt me (Luke 10:19).
Prayers for Healing and Good Dreams
- Father, heal every memory, grief or trauma that feeds my nightmares. Bind up my broken heart.
- Lord, if You want to speak to me in the night, open my ears and give me understanding, as You did for Joseph and Daniel (Job 33:15–16).
- Instruct me in the night seasons, and let me wake up refreshed, with counsel and peace (Psalm 16:7).
- Thank You, Lord, that I will lie down and sleep, and wake again, because You sustain me (Psalm 3:5). In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Short Prayer Against Bad Dreams to Pray Tonight
Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing me through this day. I lay down every worry, every fear and every unforgiveness at Your feet. I cover my mind, my body and this room with the blood of Jesus. I reject every evil dream and every spirit of fear, and I receive Your perfect peace. Let Your angels watch over me and my family. Give me sweet, restful sleep, and let me wake up strong and ready to serve You. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
What to Do When You Wake From a Bad Dream
Waking in fear at 2 or 3 a.m. can feel very lonely. Here is a calm approach:
- Breathe slowly and remind yourself where you are. Turn on a soft light if it helps.
- Speak a short verse aloud, such as “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” (Psalm 27:1).
- Pray briefly, handing the dream to God. You do not need to pray for hours in panic.
- Do not over-analyse. Write a few words in your notebook and review it in daylight with a mature believer if a dream keeps repeating.
- Go back to sleep in faith. God is still awake.

When Bad Dreams Need More Than Prayer
Prayer is powerful, and so is wisdom. Please speak to a doctor if your nightmares happen most nights, you are afraid to sleep, you act out your dreams, you snore loudly or stop breathing in sleep, or you feel exhausted during the day. The Sleep Foundation explains common causes and treatments for nightmares, including stress, medication and trauma. If dreams are linked to past abuse or a frightening experience, a Christian counsellor can help you heal. If you ever feel hopeless or think about harming yourself, contact a mental-health professional or emergency service in your country straight away.
A Warning About Exploitative “Deliverance”
Sadly, some people use fear of dreams to exploit women. True ministry never demands large “seed” payments, river or shrine baths, undressing, secret night visits, or guarantees that dreams will stop by a certain date. Jesus said, “freely ye have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8). If someone makes you feel unsafe, step away and talk to a trusted pastor or family member.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best prayer against bad dreams?
There is no single “magic” prayer. A sincere prayer that surrenders your night to God, rejects fear, and stands on verses like Psalm 4:8 and Proverbs 3:24 is powerful. The short prayer above is a good place to start.
Which Bible verse is against bad dreams?
Proverbs 3:24, Psalm 91:5, Psalm 4:8 and 2 Timothy 1:7 are among the most loved bible verses against bad dreams. Psalm 91 as a whole is often read before sleep.
How do I pray before sleeping at night?
Thank God for the day, forgive anyone who hurt you, confess any sin, read one verse, then pray for peace and protection over yourself and your home. Keep it simple and sincere.
Are all bad dreams spiritual attacks?
No. Many bad dreams come from stress, illness, grief, medicines or a busy mind (Ecclesiastes 5:3). Some believers do experience troubling dreams they understand as spiritual. Pray about every dream, but also take care of your health and seek medical help when nightmares are frequent.
Can I pray against bad dreams for my children?
Yes. Lay your hand gently on your child, pray a short, calm prayer, and read a comforting verse together. Avoid frightening language. If a child has frequent night terrors, speak to a doctor.
Should I fast to stop bad dreams?
Fasting can deepen your prayer life, but it is not a payment to make dreams stop. Fast safely, and check with a doctor if you are pregnant, diabetic or on regular medication.
Final Encouragement
Dear sister, you do not have to dread the night. This prayer against bad dreams is not a ritual. It is an invitation to rest in the God who never sleeps. Keep a verse by your bed, keep your heart at peace with God and others, and keep looking after your health. Little by little, many believers find their nights becoming calmer.
