What is a spiritual spouse? In African and Pentecostal Christian teaching, a spiritual spouse is believed to be an unclean spirit that claims a person in a counterfeit “marriage” — called a spiritual husband when it troubles a woman and a spiritual wife when it troubles a man. This guide explains the meaning, the signs many believers describe in women and men, what the Bible teaches, and how Christians pray towards freedom.

Whether you landed here after a troubling dream, a string of broken relationships, or simply a sermon that left you with questions, you are welcome. We write as a devotional ministry, with Scripture, compassion and honesty. Nothing here is a diagnosis, and nothing here is meant to frighten you.

Spiritual Spouse Meaning

The phrase “spiritual spouse” does not appear in the Bible. It is a term used widely in Nigerian, Ghanaian and wider African churches, and increasingly in diaspora congregations, to describe a spiritual force believed to act like a jealous partner. The belief holds that this spirit:

  • claims a person’s affection, body or future marriage as its own;
  • may appear in dreams as a lover, husband, wife or bridegroom;
  • resists earthly relationships and marriage, or brings coldness into an existing marriage;
  • gains a foothold through what teachers call “open doors.”

Christians do not all agree on how literally to understand this. Some see it as a direct spiritual attack; others see it as a way of naming deep spiritual, emotional and generational wounds. On one point Scripture is clear: in Christ, you belong to God, and no rival covenant has the final word. “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36, KJV).

Spiritual husband vs spiritual wife

The two terms describe the same belief from different sides:

  • Spiritual husband (spirit husband): believed to trouble women. See our in-depth guide to the 10 signs of a spiritual husband.
  • Spiritual wife (spirit wife): believed to trouble men, sometimes linked in teaching to marine spirits or “queen of the coast” imagery in West Africa.

Where the belief comes from

Across Africa, traditional cultures, from Yoruba and Igbo to Akan, Ewe and beyond, have long spoken of spirit partners, river deities and dedications. When the gospel arrived, many Christians interpreted those experiences through the lens of Ephesians 6:12: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (KJV).

How Believers Say a Spiritual Spouse Gains Access

Deliverance ministers commonly describe several “doors.” You may recognise none of them, and that is fine; this list is for understanding, not self-blame.

  1. Family dedications and ancestral covenants — a child dedicated to a shrine, river or deity, or a covenant made by previous generations.
  2. Personal occult involvement — charms, rituals, “protection” incisions or spiritual baths outside of Christ.
  3. Sexual sin and soul ties — many teachers believe past sexual relationships can leave spiritual and emotional ties that need repentance and healing.
  4. Abuse and trauma — not the victim’s fault in any way, but often a place where healing prayer and professional care are both needed.
  5. Vows made in pain — words like “I will never marry” spoken in grief or anger.
  6. Exposure through media — content that stirs lust or fear, which some teachers say feeds the struggle.

Signs of a Spiritual Spouse in Women

These are the patterns women most often describe. A single experience proves nothing; ministers look for a persistent pattern, discerned in prayer, after ruling out ordinary explanations.

  • Recurring intimate or unsettling dreams about an unfamiliar man or figure
  • Relationships that collapse just before engagement, introduction or the wedding
  • Unexplained delay in marriage despite readiness and prayer
  • Sudden coldness or resistance towards a good partner
  • Distance, constant quarrels or cold intimacy within marriage
  • Waking up drained, heavy or afraid after a full night’s sleep
  • A difficult fertility journey (always alongside medical care)
  • Dreams of rivers, the sea, swimming, or a wedding to an unknown groom
  • A family pattern of late marriage or broken homes

Signs of a Spiritual Spouse in Men

Men experience this too, though they talk about it less. Commonly reported signs of a spiritual wife include:

  • Recurring sexual dreams, often with the same unfamiliar woman
  • Repeated loss of interest in a fiancée or wife without clear reason
  • Patterns of broken engagements or serial short relationships
  • Unusual difficulty with lust or pornography that resists sincere effort
  • Unexplained financial or career setbacks at key moments, which some teachers link to the same root
  • Dreams of water, mermaids or being married in a dream

Again, many of these can have ordinary causes: stress, habits, emotional wounds, or health issues. Discernment, not fear, is the goal.

What Does the Bible Say About a Spiritual Spouse?

While the Bible does not use the term, several passages shape how Christians think about it:

Genesis 6:1–4

“The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose” (Genesis 6:2, KJV). Interpreters differ widely on who the “sons of God” were, but many deliverance teachers see this passage as background for the idea of spirit–human unions.

Your body belongs to the Lord

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, KJV). Whatever claims are made in dreams, God’s ownership is the deeper truth.

Christ disarmed every hostile power

Jesus blotted out “the handwriting of ordinances that was against us… and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; and having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it” (Colossians 2:14-15, KJV).

The Lord is your true husband

“For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name” (Isaiah 54:5, KJV). For single women especially, this verse is a tender reminder that you are covenant-loved right now.

How to Break Free From a Spiritual Spouse

Freedom in Christian teaching is less about a dramatic moment and more about a faithful walk. These steps are widely taught:

  1. Give your life fully to Jesus. Freedom flows from relationship with Him, not from rituals or objects.
  2. Repent and receive forgiveness. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9, KJV).
  3. Renounce every known and unknown covenant out loud in Jesus’ name, including family dedications.
  4. Break soul ties from past relationships through prayer and, where needed, ending ongoing contact.
  5. Remove objects connected to shrines, charms or occult practice.
  6. Guard your nights with prayer, worship and a Psalm before sleep.
  7. Stay in fellowship with a sound church and a trusted prayer partner.
  8. Seal your freedom by filling your life with God’s Word (see Matthew 12:43–45).

A short prayer to begin

Father, I thank You that I am Yours, bought with the blood of Jesus. I renounce every covenant, dedication or marriage with any spirit, made by me or on my behalf. I declare that my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and my future belongs to You. Guard my sleep, heal my heart, and lead me into Your plan for marriage and family. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

When to Seek Extra Help

Prayer and wise human help go together. Please also reach out if:

  • you struggle with sleep, wake unable to move, or feel exhausted most days — a doctor can check for sleep disorders such as sleep paralysis;
  • you feel hopeless, deeply anxious or depressed, or have thoughts of harming yourself — please contact a mental-health professional or emergency services right away;
  • past abuse or trauma is part of your story — a trained Christian counsellor can walk with you;
  • you face fertility or other health concerns — keep your medical care going alongside prayer.

Be cautious of anyone who demands large sums of money, asks you to do anything that harms your body or dignity, or promises guaranteed results by a deadline.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a spiritual spouse in simple terms?

It is a belief, common in African Christian teaching, that an unclean spirit can claim a person like a jealous partner, troubling their dreams, relationships and marriage. Christians understand freedom from it through Christ.

Can men have a spiritual spouse?

Yes. When the belief concerns men, the spirit is usually called a spiritual wife, and the commonly described signs include recurring sexual dreams and repeated loss of interest in a fiancée or wife.

Is a spiritual spouse in the Bible?

The term is not in the Bible, but Christians draw on passages such as Genesis 6, Ephesians 6:12, 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 and Colossians 2:14–15 when teaching about it.

Can a spiritual marriage be broken?

Christian teaching says yes: through faith in Jesus, repentance, renouncing covenants and steady prayer. The timeline differs for everyone, and no one can honestly promise an exact outcome or date.

Does every bad dream mean I have a spiritual spouse?

No. Dreams are influenced by stress, memories, health and what we watch. Only a persistent, distressing pattern, prayed over and checked with wise counsel, leads most ministers to consider a spiritual cause.
