If you lie awake listening to every sound, or you dread falling asleep because of troubling dreams, the psalms for protection at night can become a quiet place of safety for your heart. Christian women in Nigeria, Ghana and the diaspora have long kept a Bible by the bed for this reason. This guide gathers nine KJV psalms to read before bed, a Psalm 91 prayer before sleep, a full psalm prayer for protection at night to pray aloud, and a simple bedtime routine you can start tonight.
This is devotional guidance, not a ritual or a guarantee. The Psalms are not magic words; they are prayers that turn our eyes to the God who keeps us. As David wrote, “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8).

Why Pray the Psalms at Night?
Night is often when fears grow louder. Worries about marriage, money, children, health or spiritual attack feel heavier in the dark. The psalmists knew this well: David prayed while hiding from enemies.
Praying psalms for protection at night helps in three simple ways:
- They give you words when you have none. When you are too tired or afraid to pray, Scripture becomes your prayer.
- They move your focus from fear to God—your refuge, shield and keeper.
- They build a peaceful habit that is good for spirit and body.
If you are also asking what the Bible says more broadly about spiritual oppression, our page of Bible verses about spiritual husband and our guide to what a spiritual spouse is are gentle places to begin.
9 Psalms for Protection at Night (KJV)
Here are nine psalms to say at night for protection. Choose one or two each evening, read slowly, and pray the short line that follows.
1. Psalm 91 – Under the Shadow of the Almighty
“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust” (Psalm 91:1–2).
Psalm 91 is the best-known psalm for protection, and it speaks directly to the night: “Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day” (Psalm 91:5).
Pray: “Lord, I choose to dwell in Your secret place tonight. You are my refuge and my fortress; in You I trust.”
2. Psalm 4 – Lie Down in Peace
Psalm 4 is an evening psalm. It invites you to “commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still” (Psalm 4:4) and ends with that beautiful promise of peaceful sleep in Psalm 4:8.
Pray: “Father, I lay my worries down. You alone make me dwell in safety.”
3. Psalm 3 – I Laid Me Down and Slept
Running from his son Absalom, David still wrote, “But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head” (Psalm 3:3) and “I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me” (Psalm 3:5).
Pray: “Lord, be a shield around me tonight, and let me wake refreshed because You sustain me.”
4. Psalm 121 – He That Keepeth Thee Will Not Slumber
“He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep” (Psalm 121:3–4). You can close your eyes because God never closes His. The psalm ends, “The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul” (Psalm 121:7).
Pray: “Thank You, Lord, that You stay awake over me, my home and my family.”
5. Psalm 23 – I Will Fear No Evil
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4).
Pray: “Good Shepherd, lead me beside still waters and restore my soul as I sleep.”
6. Psalm 27 – The LORD Is My Light
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1).
Pray: “Lord, be my light in this darkness and the strength of my life.”
7. Psalm 34 – The Angel of the LORD Encampeth
“The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them” (Psalm 34:7).
Pray: “Father, thank You that Your angels encamp around those who fear You. Deliver me from all my fears.”
8. Psalm 63 – In the Shadow of Thy Wings
“When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches. Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice” (Psalm 63:6–7).
Pray: “Lord, if I wake in the night, let my first thought be of You.”
9. Psalm 139 – The Night Shineth as the Day
“If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee” (Psalm 139:11–12). Nothing in the dark is hidden from God.
Pray: “Father, the darkness is not dark to You. Watch over every hour of this night.”

Psalm 91 Prayer Before Sleep
Many believers pray Psalm 91 before sleeping at night. A simple way to do this is to read a few verses, then turn each one into a personal prayer:
- Verse 1–2: “Lord, I dwell in Your secret place. You are my refuge and fortress.”
- Verse 4: “Cover me with Your feathers tonight. Your truth is my shield.”
- Verse 5–6: “I will not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of anything that walks in darkness.”
- Verse 10: “Let no evil befall me, and no plague come near my dwelling.”
- Verse 11: “Give Your angels charge over me, my children and my home.”
- Verse 15: “When I call on You, answer me. Be with me in trouble.”
This keeps Psalm 91 from becoming a formula: you are talking to your Father who loves you.
A Psalm Prayer for Protection at Night (Pray Aloud)
Heavenly Father, I thank You for carrying me through this day. Before I sleep, I bring You every worry and every fear. I forgive anyone who hurt me today, and I ask You to forgive my sins through the blood of Jesus Christ.
Lord, You are my refuge and my fortress. Cover me with Your feathers, and let Your truth be my shield. I will not be afraid of the terror by night. You who keep me do not slumber nor sleep. Preserve my going out and my coming in, and preserve my soul from all evil.
I place my body, my mind, my dreams, my marriage and my family under the protection of Jesus. Anything that is not from You has no right to my rest. Let Your angels encamp around my home. Give me sweet sleep, and let me wake refreshed in the morning.
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep, for You alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Simple 15-Minute Bedtime Routine With the Psalms
Protection at night is not only about what you pray, but how you prepare to rest. Try this calm routine:
- Slow down. Put your phone away and dim the lights.
- Read one psalm (5 minutes) from the list above, slowly and aloud if you can.
- Pray honestly (3–5 minutes). Tell God what you are afraid of, then pray the psalm prayer above. “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” (Philippians 4:6).
- Give thanks (1 minute). Name three things God did for you today.
- Lie down in peace. Repeat a short verse such as Psalm 4:8 or Proverbs 3:24 as you fall asleep: “When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.”
Healthy habits help too. Regular sleep times, a cool and quiet room, and less caffeine and screen time late at night all help; the Sleep Foundation’s guide to sleep hygiene explains these simply. Caring for your body is not a lack of faith. As Psalm 127:2 says, “he giveth his beloved sleep.”
Psalms to Read at Midnight or When You Wake Afraid
Whether you rise for midnight prayer or wake suddenly with a racing heart, keep these verses close:
- Psalm 119:62 – “At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments.”
- Psalm 42:8 – “In the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.”
- Psalm 56:3 – “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”
- Psalm 46:1 – “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
If you pray at midnight, keep it peaceful and brief enough to protect your sleep.
If Bad Dreams or Night Attacks Keep Coming
Some women pray psalms for protection at night because of repeated disturbing dreams—a recurring visitor, sexual dreams or water dreams. You are not alone, and you are not to blame.
These guides may help:

Remember that dreams are also shaped by stress, trauma, medication and sleep problems. The Sleep Foundation explains common causes of nightmares. Please see a doctor if you have ongoing nightmares, sleep paralysis, loud snoring, or exhaustion during the day. If past abuse or trauma is resurfacing at night, a Christian counsellor can walk with you. If you ever feel hopeless or have thoughts of harming yourself, contact a mental-health professional or emergency service straight away. Seeking help is wisdom, not weakness.

A Gentle Warning: Psalms Are Not Charms
Sometimes the Psalms are treated like charms—written on paper under the pillow, mixed with special water, or sold with “anointed” items. Scripture is powerful because it is God’s Word, not because of a ritual or a price tag.
Please be careful with anyone who:
- Demands money, “seed” payments or expensive items before praying for you
- Sells special candles, oils, soaps or written psalms as guaranteed protection
- Asks you to bathe at a river or shrine, or to bring underwear, hair or nails
- Asks you to undress or to meet alone at night for “special” prayer
- Promises guaranteed results, or tells you to stop seeing your doctor
Jesus said, “freely ye have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8). True ministry points you to Christ and respects your dignity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which psalm is best for protection at night?
Psalm 91 is the best-known, but Psalm 4, Psalm 3, Psalm 121 and Psalm 23 are also wonderful psalms for protection at night. The “best” psalm is the one you read with faith and understanding.
Can I read Psalm 91 every night before sleeping?
Yes. Many believers read Psalm 91 every night. Read it as a prayer of trust, not a formula.
What psalm should I read when I wake up afraid at night?
Try Psalm 56:3, Psalm 27:1 or Psalm 121. Say the verse slowly and remember that God is awake and with you.
Is it okay to play Psalm 91 audio while I sleep?
Yes, if it helps you rest. Keep the volume low, and let it be a comfort, not a substitute for your own prayer.
What if I still cannot sleep after praying?
Keep praying without panic, and look after your body. If sleeplessness or bad dreams continue for weeks, speak to a doctor and a trusted pastor.
Final Encouragement
You do not have to face the night alone. The God of the Psalms is your refuge, your shield and your keeper, and He “shall neither slumber nor sleep.” Tonight, open your Bible to one psalm, pray honestly, and lie down in peace.
