If you have been whispering a prayer for my future husband into your pillow at night, you are not alone. Many Christian women in Nigeria, Ghana and across the diaspora carry this quiet longing: to meet a man who loves God, loves them well and builds a home that honours Christ. Some are praying for a husband to find them; others are already praying for a man they have not yet met, asking God to protect him, shape him and prepare them both. This guide brings that longing into the light of Scripture. You will find what the Bible says about marriage and waiting, the qualities of a godly husband, KJV verses to pray, 21 prayer points, a short prayer you can say tonight, a 7-day plan and honest wisdom for the season of waiting.
Before we begin, hear this: your desire for marriage is not shameful, and it is not too small for God. “Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart” (Psalm 37:4).

Why Pray for Your Future Husband?
Praying for a husband you have not met may feel strange at first, but it fits the way Scripture teaches us to pray. Paul writes, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” (Philippians 4:6). “Every thing” includes your future marriage.
Prayer for your future husband does three things. It brings your desire to God instead of carrying it alone. It shapes your own heart, so that you are growing into the wife you hope to be while you wait. And it covers a real man somewhere, who is also facing temptations, battles and decisions, in God’s protection and grace.
Marriage is God’s idea
From the very beginning God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him” (Genesis 2:18). Scripture calls marriage “honourable in all” (Hebrews 13:4), and Proverbs says, “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the Lord” (Proverbs 18:22). Praying for a godly marriage is not worldly or selfish. You are asking God for something He Himself called good.
What prayer does not do
Prayer is not a way to force a particular man to love you, and it is not a spiritual formula that guarantees a wedding by a certain date. God respects every person’s free will, and His timing is often different from ours. Some believers marry young, some marry later, and some are called to serve God single for a season or for life (1 Corinthians 7:7). Prayer brings your heart into God’s hands, so that whatever He does, you are at peace.
What the Bible Shows About Finding a Spouse
The Bible does not give a step-by-step dating manual, but it does give us beautiful stories of God at work in marriages.
Isaac and Rebekah: a prayer for guidance
When Abraham’s servant went to find a wife for Isaac, he began with prayer: “O Lord God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham” (Genesis 24:12). God answered, and the servant worshipped: “I being in the way, the Lord led me” (Genesis 24:27). Notice that he was “in the way”, faithfully doing what he had been given to do, when God led him. Many single women find this freeing: you do not have to chase. Keep walking with God and stay in the way.
Ruth and Boaz: character before romance
Ruth was a widow and a foreigner, yet she became known for her faithfulness. Boaz blessed her, saying, “The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust” (Ruth 2:12). Later he told her, “all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman” (Ruth 3:11). Boaz, for his part, was kind, generous, honest and careful to do things the right way in front of the elders. Their story shows that godly character, on both sides, is the soil a good marriage grows from.
Waiting is not wasted
The Bible honours those who wait on God: “The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him” (Lamentations 3:25). If your waiting has been long, our prayer for delayed marriage and our Bible verses for single women waiting for marriage were written for exactly this season.
Qualities of a Godly Husband to Pray For
It helps to pray specifically. Instead of a list of looks or wealth, Scripture points us to character. Here are qualities many women pray for, each with a verse:
- He loves and fears God. “Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in his commandments” (Psalm 112:1).
- He is a believer. “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14).
- He loves sacrificially. “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it” (Ephesians 5:25).
- He is gentle, not harsh. “Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them” (Colossians 3:19).
- He honours and understands his wife. Peter tells husbands to dwell with their wives “according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife … as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered” (1 Peter 3:7).
- He walks in the fruit of the Spirit. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance” (Galatians 5:22-23).
- He is just, merciful and humble. “What doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” (Micah 6:8).
- He is respected for his integrity. Of the virtuous woman’s husband Scripture says, “Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land” (Proverbs 31:23).
- He is a man of his word who leads his home to God. Like Joshua: “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).
As you pray through this list, pray it over yourself too. A godly marriage is two people growing in Christ, not one perfect person rescuing another.

How to Pray for Your Future Husband: 7 Steps
- Start with surrender. Tell God honestly what you want, then place it in His hands. “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
- Seek God first. Jesus said, “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). Let your relationship with God be your first love, not a waiting room.
- Pray for him specifically. You may not know his name, but you can pray for his salvation, his purity, his work, his health, his family and his walk with God.
- Pray for yourself. Ask God to heal old wounds, grow your character and prepare you to be a loving, wise wife. If past relationships still pull at your heart, our guide on how to break soul ties can help, and the book Unholy Covenants walks through closing doors from a sexual past with a 21-day prayer plan.
- Ask for wisdom and discernment. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (James 1:5). Pray that you will recognise a godly man and recognise warning signs just as clearly.
- Guard your heart. “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23). Waiting well means saying no to relationships that pull you away from God, however lonely the season feels.
- Pray with thanksgiving and expectation. Thank God in advance for His good plans, while leaving the timing to Him. “For the vision is yet for an appointed time … though it tarry, wait for it” (Habakkuk 2:3).

21 Prayer Points for My Future Husband
Pray these slowly, one group a day or all at once. Change the words to fit your heart.
For his walk with God
- Father, wherever my future husband is today, draw him close to You. Let him love You first and above all (Matthew 22:37).
- Lord, if he does not yet know You, save him and fill him with Your Holy Spirit.
- Make him a man who delights in Your Word and meditates on it day and night, like a tree planted by the rivers of water (Psalm 1:2-3).
- Give him a heart that fears You and delights greatly in Your commandments (Psalm 112:1).
For his character
- Lord, grow in him the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance (Galatians 5:22-23).
- Make him a man who does justly, loves mercy and walks humbly with You (Micah 6:8).
- Teach him to love sacrificially, as Christ loved the church, and never to be harsh or bitter (Ephesians 5:25; Colossians 3:19).
- Keep him honest in his words, faithful in his work and wise with money.
For his protection
- Father, protect my future husband from accidents, sickness and every plan of the enemy. Be his sun and shield (Psalm 84:11).
- Guard him from sexual temptation and from relationships that would wound him or others. Keep his body and his heart pure (Hebrews 13:4).
- In the name of Jesus, I stand against every spiritual hindrance, every ungodly tie and every pattern that would delay or destroy the marriage You have planned for us.
- Lord, where wounds from his past or his family line need healing, heal him and set him free (John 8:36).
For me as I wait
- Father, prepare me to be a wise, loving and prudent wife (Proverbs 19:14). Heal every wound that would make me fearful or bitter.
- Help me to keep my heart with all diligence and not to awaken love before its time (Proverbs 4:23; Song of Solomon 2:7).
- Lord, break every ungodly soul tie from past relationships, and close every door I opened outside Your will.
- Fill my waiting with purpose. Let me serve You joyfully now and not put my life on hold.
For our meeting and marriage
- Lord, as You led Abraham’s servant, lead my future husband and me at the right time and in the right place (Genesis 24:27).
- Give us both wisdom and discernment. Let me recognise Your choice, and give me courage to walk away from anyone who is not (James 1:5).
- Let our families receive the relationship with peace, and let every introduction, courtship and marriage plan honour You.
- Except You build our house, we labour in vain. Build our home on Christ the Rock (Psalm 127:1; Matthew 7:24).
- Father, I commit my way to You. I trust You to bring it to pass in Your time, and I choose to be at peace until then (Psalm 37:5).

A Short Prayer for My Future Husband
Heavenly Father, thank You that marriage is Your idea and that You care about the desires of my heart. Wherever my future husband is today, I lift him up to You. Draw him close to You, protect him, keep him pure and shape him into a man after Your own heart. Prepare me too, Lord: heal my wounds, grow my character and teach me to love as You love. Break every ungodly tie and every hindrance from my past, in the name of Jesus. Lead us to each other in Your perfect time, and until then let me find my joy and security in You. I commit my way to You and I trust You to bring it to pass. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Wisdom for the Waiting Season
Prayer and wise living go together. While you pray, many believers find these practical steps help:
- Stay planted in a healthy church. Serve, join a fellowship and let mature believers know you. Godly introductions often happen through community.
- Watch for character, not only chemistry. How does he treat his mother, his workers and people who can do nothing for him? Does his faith show in his choices? The American Psychological Association has helpful guidance on healthy relationships.
- Take red flags seriously. Control, anger, pressure for sex, lies about money or other relationships, and pulling you away from family or church are warning signs, whatever he says about God.
- Involve trusted people. In many African families marriage joins two families. Let parents, pastors or mentors you trust meet the man and give honest counsel.
- Keep living fully. Grow your career, your skills, your friendships and your walk with God. Marriage adds to a full life; it does not start it.
- Deal with old wounds. If rejection or heartbreak still shapes how you see yourself, our prayer against spirit of rejection may help, and a Christian counsellor can walk with you.
If you have prayed for many years and notice repeated patterns, such as relationships that always end near marriage or disturbing night dreams, some ministers connect these with a spiritual spouse. Our guide to the signs of a spiritual husband explains this calmly and without fear. For a full guide to waiting with faith, the book Delayed, Not Denied was written for single believers in this season.
Beware of Harmful “Marriage Breakthrough” Practices
Women who long for marriage are often targeted by people who exploit that longing. Jesus said, “freely ye have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8). Be careful of anyone who:
- Demands money, “seed” or costly items before they will pray for your marriage.
- Promises a husband by a set date or names a man God has supposedly chosen for you.
- Offers love potions, charms, special soaps, or river or shrine baths, or asks you to undress.
- Tells you to pray against a particular man’s marriage or relationship so he will come to you.
- Pressures you to marry someone quickly because a “prophet” said so, without time to know him.
True ministry points you to Jesus, respects your dignity and never puts a price on prayer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it biblical to pray for a future husband?
Yes. Scripture invites us to bring every request to God with thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6), and it calls marriage good and honourable (Genesis 2:18; Hebrews 13:4). Abraham’s servant prayed for guidance in finding a wife for Isaac (Genesis 24:12), and God answered.
What is a powerful prayer for my future husband to find me?
There is no magic wording. A powerful prayer is honest, rooted in Scripture and surrendered to God’s will. Pray Proverbs 18:22 and Genesis 24:27, asking God to lead your future husband to you at the right time, and pair your prayer with a life of faith, community and wise choices. The short prayer above is a good place to start.
What Bible verses can I pray for my future husband?
Genesis 2:18, Proverbs 18:22, Proverbs 19:14, Psalm 37:4-5, Psalm 84:11, Psalm 127:1, Psalm 112:1, Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, Ephesians 5:25, Colossians 3:19, 1 Peter 3:7 and Galatians 5:22-23 are all helpful.
Can I pray for a specific man to become my husband?
You can bring your feelings honestly to God, but pray with an open hand: “Lord, if he is Your will for me, and I am Your will for him.” Never pray against someone’s existing marriage or try to control another person’s choice. Ask God for discernment and peace, and accept His answer.
What if I have prayed for years and nothing has happened?
Long waiting is painful, and your feelings matter to God. Keep praying, but also invite trusted counsel into your life, examine any patterns, and look after your emotional health. Delay is not a verdict on your worth. Our prayer for delayed marriage offers 21 more prayer points for this season.
Should I also pray for my future husband’s family and children?
Yes. Many women pray for a husband’s parents and siblings, for peace between the two families, and for the children God may give them. Pray Joshua 24:15 over the home you hope to build: “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Final Encouragement
Dear sister, your prayers are not falling on deaf ears. The God who led Abraham’s servant to Rebekah, who honoured Ruth’s faithfulness and who sets the solitary in families sees you and the man you are praying for. Keep delighting in the Lord, keep growing, keep your heart pure and keep praying with hope. Whatever His timing, His plans for you are good.
