Spiritual Attack in Dreams: Signs, Bible Verses & Prayer

Sun rising over misty trees at dawn – peace after a spiritual attack in dreams

By Dr. Grace Osei, Covenant Fire Ministries · Reviewed under our Editorial Standards · New here? Start here.

You wake up suddenly in the dark, your heart racing. In the dream you were being chased, pressed down, fed something, or visited by someone you did not want near you. Many believers in Nigeria, Ghana and around the world describe experiences like this as a spiritual attack in dreams. If that is where you are tonight, you are not alone, and you are not without help. This guide explains what the Bible says about the night and the enemy, the kinds of dreams believers often describe as attacks, how to tell a spiritual battle from an ordinary bad dream, what to do when you wake up, and Scripture-based prayers you can pray before you sleep.

One gentle word before we begin: not every frightening dream is an attack. Stress, illness, medication and trauma can all bring disturbing dreams. Scripture calls us to discernment, not to fear, and this guide will help you hold both the spiritual and the practical together.

What Is a Spiritual Attack in Dreams?

When Christians speak of a spiritual attack in dreams, they usually mean a dream that seems to come from the enemy rather than from God or from the ordinary workings of the mind. The person often wakes with fear, heaviness, confusion or a sense of being violated, and the same kind of dream may return again and again.

The Bible does not use the phrase “spiritual attack in dreams”, but it does teach that believers are in a real spiritual battle: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12). It also teaches that this enemy has already been defeated by Christ, who “having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it” (Colossians 2:15).

So we take the battle seriously, but we do not give the enemy more honour than he deserves. The night belongs to God too.

What the Bible Says About Spiritual Attacks at Night

Scripture is honest that the night can be a time of fear and of spiritual activity. Eliphaz described a terrifying night experience: “In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men, Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake. Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up” (Job 4:13-15). Job himself cried out, “Then thou scarest me with dreams, and terrifiest me through visions” (Job 7:14).

Jesus also told a parable that many believers think of when they speak of night attacks: “But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way” (Matthew 13:25). In the parable the tares are the work of the enemy among God’s people. It is not a teaching about dreams as such, but it reminds us that the enemy likes to work quietly, when people are unaware.

Yet the Bible never leaves us in fear. The same Scriptures that speak of the terror by night speak even louder of God’s protection:

  • “Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness” (Psalm 91:5-6).
  • “Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep” (Psalm 121:4).
  • “I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me” (Psalm 3:5).
  • “The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them” (Psalm 34:7).

God also speaks in dreams for good. “In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; Then he openeth the ears of men” (Job 33:15-16). If you want to explore this side of the subject, read what the Bible says about dreams and our guide on how to know if a dream is from God.

Common Signs of Spiritual Attacks in Dreams

The list below describes dreams that many believers and ministers in African churches associate with spiritual attack. These are patterns people describe, not proof. A single dream means very little; what matters is the fruit, the frequency and what the Holy Spirit and Scripture show you.

  1. Being chased, beaten or trapped. Repeated dreams of being pursued by people or animals, or of being unable to escape a room or a place.
  2. Eating or drinking in the dream. Being fed by strangers, relatives or unknown people, often followed by heaviness or a bad taste on waking.
  3. Sexual encounters or a night visitor. Dreams of a familiar or unknown partner, sometimes on a regular pattern. Many believers link this to a spiritual husband or wife. Our articles on the spiritual husband in dreams and the signs of a spiritual husband look at this carefully.
  4. Pressing, choking or being unable to move. Feeling a weight on your chest or being unable to speak or move as you wake. (Please read the section on sleep paralysis below.)
  5. Dreams of the dead or of old places. Repeatedly returning to a village, an old school or a former house, or being called by people who have died.
  6. Water, snakes or animals attacking. Being pulled into a river or sea, bitten by a snake, or attacked by dogs or cats. Our guide to the dream of snakes biblical meaning explains what Scripture does and does not say about serpents.
  7. Losing things. Losing your shoes, bag, money, certificate or wedding ring in the dream, followed by a feeling of loss or delay in waking life.
  8. Waking with fear, heaviness or a strong desire not to pray. A lingering sense of oppression, confusion or hopelessness that has no clear natural cause.

Notice that the key question is not “what does this symbol mean?” but “what is the fruit?” The enemy’s aim, as Jesus said, is to “steal, and to kill, and to destroy”, while Christ came “that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). Dreams that repeatedly leave you fearful, ashamed and pulled away from God are worth bringing to Him in prayer.

Spiritual Attack or Ordinary Bad Dream? How to Discern

The Bible is realistic about ordinary dreams too: “For a dream cometh through the multitude of business” (Ecclesiastes 5:3). A busy, anxious mind produces busy, anxious dreams. Before you conclude that every bad dream is an attack, ask a few honest questions:

  • What has been happening in my life? Stress at work, money worries, grief, conflict or a frightening film can all show up in dreams.
  • Is there a health cause? Fever, some medicines, alcohol, late heavy meals, poor sleep and sleep disorders can all bring vivid or disturbing dreams. The Sleep Foundation’s guide to nightmares lists many common causes.
  • Is this a pattern? One dream is rarely significant. A dream that repeats with the same theme over weeks or months deserves more prayerful attention.
  • What does Scripture say? Hold every dream up to the Word. God never contradicts His Word, and He does not speak to fill you with terror and shame.
  • What is the fruit? Do you wake with peace and direction, or with fear, accusation and confusion?

A Word About Sleep Paralysis

Many people who describe being “pressed down” at night are experiencing sleep paralysis, a common sleep event in which the mind wakes before the body can move. It can come with frightening sensations and a feeling that someone is in the room. The Sleep Foundation explains sleep paralysis and what helps. You can pray through these moments, and you should also speak to a doctor if they happen often. Getting medical help is not a lack of faith.

What to Do When You Wake Up From a Spiritual Attack Dream

Here is a calm, simple response you can follow, whether it is 2am or early morning.

  1. Call on the name of Jesus. You do not need long words. Simply say, “Jesus, I belong to You. Your blood covers me.” “Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4).
  2. Reject the fear. Speak it out: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).
  3. Submit and resist. “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). Submission comes first. Offer yourself to God again, then refuse every work of darkness.
  4. Cancel the dream in prayer, then let it go. Ask God to cancel anything evil you saw and to overrule it with His purpose. Many believers pray, “Every evil plan shown to me in this dream, I reject it in Jesus’ name.” “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper” (Isaiah 54:17).
  5. Replace it with the Word. Read a psalm aloud, such as Psalm 91, Psalm 4 or Psalm 121. Our guide to psalms for protection at night has more.
  6. Write it down briefly. Note the date and the main theme, not every frightening detail. Over time this helps you, and a trusted pastor, see patterns.
  7. Rest again. “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8). Going back to sleep is an act of trust.

If you often wake in the middle of the night, you may find it helpful to pray with our midnight prayer points with Bible verses.

How to Stop Spiritual Attacks in Dreams: Daily Habits

There is no secret formula or special object that “locks” your dreams. Protection comes from walking closely with God. These habits help many believers sleep in peace.

Close the Doors in Your Life

  • Give your life fully to Christ. “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). Your safety rests on what Jesus has done, not on your performance.
  • Repent of known sin and renounce occult involvement. If you have visited shrines, used charms, taken part in rituals or made vows to other spirits, confess and renounce them before God.
  • Deal with ungodly ties. Past sexual relationships, family dedications and covenants are often mentioned when believers describe recurring night attacks. If this sounds like your story, Unholy Covenants by Dr. Grace Osei walks through closing those doors in Christ.
  • Forgive. Bitterness gives the enemy ground. Release those who hurt you into God’s hands.

Guard Your Evenings

  • Guard what you watch and listen to. “Whatsoever things are true… honest… just… pure… lovely… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8).
  • Pray before you sleep. A short prayer, a psalm and a few minutes of worship can change the atmosphere of your room. See our prayer against bad dreams for a simple bedtime routine.
  • Dedicate your room to God. Some families pray over their home and bedroom. Our guide on how to anoint your room explains what the Bible says and how to do it simply.
  • Look after your body. Regular sleep times, less caffeine and alcohol, a lighter evening meal and less screen time all help. The Sleep Foundation’s sleep hygiene guide has practical tips.

Put On the Armour of God

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Ephesians 6:10-11). Read Ephesians 6:10-18 slowly and pray each piece of the armour over your life: truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the Word and prayer. “Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked” (Ephesians 6:16).

Bible Verses Against Spiritual Attacks in Dreams (KJV)

Read these aloud at bedtime, or write a few on a card by your bed.

  • “When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet” (Proverbs 3:24).
  • “It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep” (Psalm 127:2).
  • “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee” (Isaiah 26:3).
  • “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you” (Luke 10:19).
  • “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds” (2 Corinthians 10:4).
  • “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith” (1 Peter 5:8-9).
  • “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).
  • “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

Prayer Points Against Spiritual Attacks in Dreams

Pray these slowly before bed or when you wake from a troubling dream. Use your own words and bring your own situation to God.

  1. Father, thank You that You neither slumber nor sleep. I commit my sleep, my mind and my body into Your hands tonight (Psalm 121:4).
  2. Lord Jesus, I belong to You. I plead Your blood over my life, my room and my home.
  3. I submit myself to God, and I resist every power of darkness assigned against my sleep, in Jesus’ name (James 4:7).
  4. Every evil plan shown to me in my dreams, I reject it and cancel it by the authority of Jesus Christ (Isaiah 54:17).
  5. I refuse every food, drink or exchange offered to me in the dream, and I ask the Holy Spirit to cleanse me completely.
  6. Every night visitor or ungodly spirit that claims any right over my body or my marriage, I renounce you. My body is the temple of the Holy Ghost (1 Corinthians 6:19).
  7. Lord, close every door I have opened through sin, occult practice or ungodly covenant, and seal it with the blood of Jesus.
  8. I break every pattern of repeated attack in my dreams, in the name of Jesus (Colossians 2:15).
  9. Father, give Your angels charge over me. Let them encamp around my home tonight (Psalm 34:7, Psalm 91:11).
  10. I reject the spirit of fear. I receive power, love and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).
  11. Lord, heal any trauma or wound in my heart that the enemy has used against me in the night.
  12. Holy Spirit, if You are speaking to me through any dream, give me understanding, and protect me from every deception.
  13. Let my sleep be sweet, Lord, as You have promised (Proverbs 3:24).
  14. Thank You, Father, that nothing shall separate me from Your love in Christ Jesus, neither powers nor things present nor things to come (Romans 8:38-39).

A Prayer Before Sleep Against Spiritual Attacks

Heavenly Father, I come to You in the name of Jesus. Thank You for keeping me through this day. I confess my sins and receive Your forgiveness. I forgive everyone who has hurt me. Tonight I place my mind, my body, my dreams and my home under the blood of Jesus. I put on the whole armour of God. I take the shield of faith to quench every fiery dart of the wicked. Every power that walks in darkness, I resist you in Jesus’ name; you have no place in my sleep. Lord, You give Your beloved sleep, so I lie down in peace. Let Your angels watch over me and my family. If You want to speak to me tonight, open my ears, and keep me from every deception. Let me wake refreshed, at peace and ready to serve You. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

When to Seek Help

Prayer and practical care belong together. Please reach out for help if:

  • Your sleep is badly disturbed for weeks, you snore loudly, stop breathing at night or feel exhausted every day. See a doctor.
  • You experience frequent sleep paralysis, sleepwalking or night terrors. A doctor can help you understand what is happening.
  • The dreams are linked to past abuse or trauma. A trained Christian counsellor can walk with you. The American Psychological Association’s trauma page explains how trauma can affect sleep and dreams.
  • You feel hopeless or have thoughts of harming yourself. Please speak to someone you trust today and contact a doctor or local emergency service.

Beware of Harmful “Deliverance” Practices

Fear of night attacks is sometimes exploited. Be careful of anyone who:

  • Demands money, “seed” or special items before they will pray for you. Jesus said, “freely ye have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8).
  • Sells “anointed” objects, charms or water as protection for your dreams.
  • Asks you to bathe in a river, visit a shrine, go somewhere lonely at night or undress for “cleansing”.
  • Uses a dream to accuse a relative, a child or an elderly person of witchcraft. Dreams are never proof, and such accusations can cause terrible harm.
  • Promises that your dreams will stop by a certain date, or tells you to stop medical treatment.

True ministry points you to Jesus, respects your dignity and your health, and never puts a price on prayer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs of a spiritual attack in dreams?

Believers often describe recurring dreams of being chased, fed, sexually visited, pressed down, attacked by animals or losing things, followed by fear or heaviness on waking. These are patterns, not proof. Look at the frequency, the fruit and what Scripture shows you, and rule out health causes too.

What does the Bible say about spiritual attacks in dreams?

The Bible does not use the phrase, but it teaches that we wrestle against spiritual powers (Ephesians 6:12), records frightening night experiences (Job 4:13-15, Job 7:14) and promises God’s protection by night (Psalm 91:5, Proverbs 3:24, Psalm 121:4). Christ has already triumphed over every power (Colossians 2:15).

Can a bad dream harm me?

A dream itself cannot override the protection of God over a believer. “Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Treat troubling dreams as a call to pray, not as a sentence. If dreams are affecting your health or daily life, please also see a doctor.

What should I pray after a spiritual attack in my dream?

Call on Jesus, reject fear, submit to God and resist the enemy (James 4:7), cancel the dream in prayer, read a psalm aloud and go back to sleep in trust. The prayer points above give you words to use.

Why do I keep having spiritual attacks in my dreams?

Recurring attacks may point to an open door such as unconfessed sin, occult involvement, ungodly soul ties or family covenants, but they can also come from stress, trauma or a sleep disorder. Pray, examine your life honestly, seek wise pastoral counsel and see a doctor if the dreams persist.

Is sleep paralysis a spiritual attack?

Sleep paralysis is a recognised sleep event in which the mind wakes before the body can move. It can feel very frightening. You can pray through it, and you should also speak to a doctor if it happens often. Taking care of your health honours God.

Final Encouragement

Dear sister, the night may feel long, but you do not face it alone. The God who kept Israel watches over you, and the One who triumphed over every principality and power lives in you. Pray simply, sleep in trust, care for your body and keep your heart close to His Word. Over time, many believers find that their nights grow quieter as they walk steadily with Jesus.
