Many Christian women searching for answers about a spiritual husband and children are carrying two burdens at once: troubling dreams, and a longing for a healthy home. Some have been told that a spiritual husband is “raising spiritual children” with them in the dream world. Others struggle with delayed conception and fear that a spirit is the cause. This guide explains what believers mean by spiritual husband and children, what Scripture actually says, how to pray with peace, and why medical care for fertility must never be skipped.
Please read this as compassionate, faith-based guidance, not a diagnosis. No one can honestly claim that spirits always cause infertility, and no one can guarantee a timeline for conception. Our hope rests in Christ: “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).

Spiritual Husband and Children: What Do Believers Mean?
In many African churches across Nigeria, Ghana and the diaspora, a “spiritual husband” is described as a spirit that attaches itself to a woman through dreams of intimacy or marriage and resists her peace, purity and real-life relationships. You can read a fuller overview in our pillar guide on signs of a spiritual husband and our page on what a spiritual spouse is.
When ministers speak of a spiritual husband and children, they usually mean one of these beliefs:
- Dreams of being married in the spirit and raising children with the same figure.
- Dreams of giving birth, nursing, or being pregnant by a spiritual husband.
- A fear that “spiritual children” are being raised in the dream world while physical children are delayed.
- A sense that every pregnancy attempt ends in loss, delay or unexplained coldness in marriage.
These are real experiences for many women, not a medical diagnosis. Fertility has many ordinary causes: hormones, age, infections, male-factor issues, stress and more. The NHS explains infertility and when to see a doctor. Caring for your body is not a lack of faith.
Is “Spiritual Husband and Children” in the Bible?
To be honest, the exact phrase “spiritual husband and children” does not appear in the Bible. Christians who teach on it point to spiritual warfare passages such as Ephesians 6:12, warnings about sexual sin in 1 Corinthians 6, and stories of barrenness and prayer such as Hannah’s. Scripture is clear on the most important truths: children are a gift from God, the body belongs to the Lord, and Jesus triumphs over every principality. “Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward” (Psalm 127:3). Patterns Believers Describe Around Spiritual Children
The patterns below are what pastors and deliverance ministers commonly describe. One dream on its own means very little. What matters is a lasting pattern, especially when several appear together, and always after ordinary medical causes have been checked.
1. Recurring Dreams of Pregnancy or Birth With a Spiritual Husband
Some women describe repeated dreams of being pregnant by the same figure, giving birth in the spirit, or nursing a child unknown in waking life. Our guide to the biblical meaning of dreams of intimacy explains related patterns gently.
2. Naming, Dedication or “Naming Ceremonies” in Dreams
Ministers sometimes mention dreams where a child is named, dedicated at a shrine, or presented to family in the spirit. Believers usually respond by rejecting such dedications in prayer and declaring that every child — present or future — belongs to Christ alone.
3. Waking Exhaustion After “Mothering” Dreams
Some wake feeling drained, as if they have been caring for children all night. Sleep quality, anaemia, thyroid issues and depression can also cause morning exhaustion, so please see a doctor as well as praying.
4. Delayed Conception With No Clear Medical Finding (Yet)
Many women search “spiritual husband and children” after months or years of trying to conceive. Delayed conception has many causes. A full medical workup for both partners is essential. Do not let fear of a spirit replace wise medical care.
5. Repeated Miscarriage or Pregnancy Loss
Pregnancy loss is heartbreaking. Some believers pray about spiritual attack; doctors also investigate clotting disorders, chromosomal issues, infections and other medical factors. Both prayer and medical follow-up belong together. Grief counselling can also help.
6. Coldness Toward Children or Toward Your Husband
Some describe a sudden aversion to babies, or irritability toward a husband after intimacy. These feelings can also come from trauma, depression or relationship strain. Speak with a trusted counsellor if trauma is part of your story.
7. A Family Pattern of Barrenness or Broken Homes
Some notice the same story in their family line: delayed marriage, few children, or homes without peace. Many believers pray about generational covenants while also seeking good counsel.
8. Water Dreams Linked to “Marine” Themes
Dreams of rivers, the sea, or children from water are often linked with marine spirits. See our guide to marine spirit signs before drawing conclusions.

Prayer Against Spiritual Husband and Children
Many search for a prayer against spiritual husband and children. Prayer is not a charm, and it is not a substitute for medical care. It is bringing your whole story — dreams, fear, longing and hope — to the God who hears. Hannah “was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore” (1 Samuel 1:10–11). God heard her.
A Renunciation Prayer (Pray Aloud)
Heavenly Father, I come to You in the name of Jesus Christ. Thank You that I am bought with a price and my body is the temple of the Holy Ghost. I confess every sin, including every sexual sin and every door I have opened knowingly or unknowingly. Wash me in the blood of Jesus and create in me a clean heart, O God.
In the name of Jesus, I renounce every spiritual marriage, covenant, ring, gift or dedication made with any spirit, through my actions or through my family line. I renounce every claim of a spiritual husband over my womb, my dreams, my marriage and my future children. I declare that I belong to Jesus alone, and in marriage I belong to my husband alone. Every so-called spiritual child and every ungodly dedication is cancelled by the blood of Jesus.
Lord, restore my peace, my sleep and my hope. If it is Your will, bless the fruit of my womb in Your time. Help me seek wise medical care without fear. Give me grace to love my husband, and fill our home with Your presence. Whom the Son sets free is free indeed. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Short Prayer Points for Daily Use
- “Lord, children are an heritage of Yours; I trust the fruit of the womb to You” (Psalm 127:3).
- “Every covenant of a spiritual husband over my womb is broken by the blood of Jesus.”
- “Holy Spirit, purify my dreams and guard my sleep tonight” (Psalm 4:8).
- “Father, make me a joyful mother of children in Your time” (Psalm 113:9).
- “I stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ has made me free” (Galatians 5:1).

What Scripture Says About Children, Hope and Freedom
The Bible treats children as gifts and barrenness with tenderness. God said, “Be fruitful, and multiply” (Genesis 1:28). The psalmist sings that God “maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children” (Psalm 113:9). Isaiah comforts the desolate: “Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear… for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the LORD” (Isaiah 54:1).
Jesus said, “Suffer the little children to come unto me… for of such is the kingdom of God” (Mark 10:14). At the cross He spoiled principalities and powers, “blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us… nailing it to his cross” (Colossians 2:14–15). The biblical centre is trust in Christ and hope that refuses to shame women who wait.
Practical Steps: Faith and Wisdom Together
Freedom is not bought from a prophet. It is received through Jesus and walked out daily. These steps reflect what many ministers teach, held together with medical wisdom:
- Surrender to Christ afresh. Confess Jesus as Lord and invite the Holy Spirit to fill every part of your life.
- Repent and close known doors. Confess sexual sin, cut off occult items, and reject charms or shrine dedications.
- Renounce every ungodly covenant over your womb, marriage and future children — aloud, in Jesus’ name.
- See a doctor together. Ask for a full fertility assessment for both partners. Follow medical advice.
- Build healthy habits. Sleep, nutrition, gentle exercise, and reduced alcohol or smoking where relevant.
- Pray with your husband if married. “Two are better than one” (Ecclesiastes 4:9). Isolation feeds fear.
- Seek wise counsel. A mature pastor and, when needed, a Christian counsellor or fertility specialist.

Fertility, Health and Safety
Spiritual concerns are real for many believers, but so are bodies, minds and marriages. Please hold both together:
- See a doctor for delayed conception (usually after 12 months of trying under 35, or sooner if over 35 or if you have irregular cycles, pelvic pain or known conditions). The NHS guide to infertility is a clear starting point.
- See a doctor after miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or unusual bleeding — do not delay for spiritual reasons.
- Speak to a counsellor if past abuse, trauma or deep grief is part of your story.
- Get urgent help if you ever feel hopeless or have thoughts of harming yourself: contact a mental-health professional or emergency service straight away.
- Never blame your husband or yourself as “cursed”. Love, patience and honest conversation protect a home.
Beware of Exploitative “Deliverance”
Sadly, some people exploit fear about spiritual husband and children. Be very careful with anyone who:
- Demands money or a “seed” before praying for your womb.
- Sells special soaps, oils, rings or powders as guaranteed fertility cures.
- Asks you to bathe at a river or shrine, or to bring underwear, hair or nails.
- Asks anyone to undress for prayer.
- Guarantees pregnancy within a set number of days.
Walk away. Jesus said, “freely ye have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8).
Frequently Asked Questions
What does spiritual husband and children mean?
Believers usually mean dreams in which a spirit husband is said to raise children with a woman, often alongside fears about delayed physical children. It is a pattern many ministers describe, not a medical diagnosis.
Is there a prayer against spiritual husband and children?
Yes — a renunciation prayer is included above. Pray with repentance and trust in Christ, and keep seeking medical care. More points are on our prayers page.
Can a spiritual husband cause infertility?
Many ministers teach that spiritual husbands resist fruitfulness. Infertility also has many physical causes. Never treat spirits as a proven medical fact. Pray, and also see a doctor.
What Bible verses help when waiting for children?
Psalm 127:3, Psalm 113:9, 1 Samuel 1:10–11, Isaiah 54:1 and Genesis 1:28 are often read with hope — as encouragement, not a guaranteed timeline.
Can I be free from a spiritual husband affecting my children?
Believers find freedom through repentance, renouncing ungodly covenants and standing in Christ’s finished work. Freedom is often a journey, and no one can honestly guarantee a timeline for conception.
Should I stop medical treatment and only pray?
No. Prayer and medical care belong together. Stopping treatment because someone promised a spiritual “breakthrough” has harmed many families.
Final Encouragement
Whether you are waking from dreams of spiritual children, waiting for conception, or praying for someone who carries this burden, you are not cursed or forgotten. Spiritual husband and children names a fear many African Christian women share — but Christ has the final word. Bring every dream, medical report and tear to Him, take sensible steps, and stand fast in His freedom.
