Many Christian men quietly wonder about the signs of spiritual wife after years of troubling dreams, broken engagements or a marriage that suddenly turned cold. Just as often, the question comes from a wife, fiancée, sister or mother who is praying for a man she loves. This guide explains what believers mean by a “spiritual wife”, ten signs of spiritual wife in a man that ministers commonly describe, what the Bible actually says, and how to pray with peace instead of fear.
Please read this as devotional guidance, not a diagnosis. Signs are patterns to bring before God, not labels to put on anyone. Our hope rests in Christ alone: “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).

Spiritual Wife Meaning: What Do Believers Mean?
In many African churches, a “spiritual wife” (also called a spirit wife) describes a spirit that is believed to attach itself to a man, often through dreams of intimacy or marriage, and to resist his peace, purity and real-life relationships. It is the male counterpart of what women call a spiritual husband. Together, both are often called a spiritual spouse.
People describe several possible doors: sexual sin or pornography, occult involvement, family dedications to shrines or water spirits, or old covenants in a family line. Others have no idea how it began. Whatever the story, the gospel remains the same: Jesus came “that he might destroy the works of the devil” (1 John 3:8).
Is “Spiritual Wife” in the Bible?
To be honest, the words “spiritual wife” do not appear in the Bible. Christians who teach on it point to passages such as Genesis 6:1–4, the warnings about sexual sin in 1 Corinthians 6, and our wrestling “against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12). Scripture is very clear on the most important truth: a believer’s body belongs to the Lord. “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20). For a fuller study, see our Bible verses about spiritual husband and spiritual spouse.
10 Signs of Spiritual Wife in a Man
These are the spiritual wife signs that pastors, deliverance ministers and believers across Nigeria, Ghana and the diaspora describe most often. One sign on its own means very little. What matters is a lasting pattern, especially when several appear together, and always after ordinary causes have been checked.
1. Recurring Dreams of Marriage or Intimacy
The most commonly mentioned sign is repeated dreams of a wedding, of being with the same woman, or of sexual encounters, sometimes with a familiar face and sometimes with a stranger. Many men wake up feeling drained or ashamed. Our guide to the biblical meaning of dreams of having sex explains this gently and without condemnation.
2. Relationships That Collapse Near Commitment
Some men notice that every serious relationship falls apart at the same stage: the introduction to family, the bride price discussion or the wedding planning. Sudden hatred, endless misunderstandings or a partner who walks away without clear reason are often described.
3. A Marriage That Suddenly Turns Cold
In marriage, a common description is a husband who loses interest in his wife without explanation, avoids closeness, or feels strangely irritated by her presence even though he loves her. Wives often notice this first, and it can be deeply painful for both.
4. Low Desire or Difficulty With Intimacy
Many teachers list loss of desire or difficulty with intimacy in marriage. This is exactly where wisdom is needed, because these are very often medical, emotional or relationship issues. The NHS lists common causes of loss of libido, including stress, tiredness, depression, medication and health conditions. Please see a doctor. Caring for your body is not a lack of faith.
5. Waking Up Pressed Down or Unable to Move
Some men describe waking up pressed down, unable to move or speak, sometimes sensing a presence in the room. Believers pray about this, and rightly so. Medically, it closely matches what doctors call sleep paralysis, which the Sleep Foundation explains in its guide to sleep paralysis. Both responses can go together: pray, and also get checked.
6. Water Dreams and Mysterious Women
Dreams of swimming, rivers, the sea, or a beautiful woman who appears from the water are often linked in African teaching with so-called marine spirits. If this is part of your story, read our balanced guide to marine spirit signs before drawing any conclusions.
7. Gifts, Rings or Food Received in Dreams
Ministers frequently mention dreams of receiving a ring, jewellery, clothes or food from a woman, or of being dressed as a groom. Believers usually respond by rejecting such “gifts” in prayer and declaring that they belong to Christ alone.
8. A Stubborn Pull Toward Sexual Sin
Some men feel a pull toward lust or pornography that seems stronger than ordinary temptation, especially after the dreams. Whether the root is spiritual, habitual or emotional, the answer is the same: confession, accountability and the renewing power of God. Job said, “I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?” (Job 31:1).
9. Heaviness Around Marriage and Progress
Some describe an unexplained heaviness whenever marriage is discussed, or a pattern where good opportunities fall through just before they are confirmed. On its own this is common to many people, so treat it gently and look at practical causes too.
10. A Family Pattern of Broken Marriages
Finally, some men notice the same story running through their family line: men who never marry, marriages that break early, or homes without peace. Many believers pray about generational covenants, while also learning healthier patterns and seeking good counsel.

How Do I Know I Have a Spiritual Wife?
If you are asking “how do I know I have a spiritual wife?”, start calmly. Rather than counting signs, ask these honest questions before God and, if possible, with a mature pastor:
- Is there a lasting pattern? Repeated over months or years, not one bad dream or one breakup.
- Have I ruled out ordinary causes? Sleep problems, stress, medication, depression, pornography habits and unresolved relationship issues can all produce similar experiences.
- Is there an open door I know about? Past sexual sin, occult practices, charms, or family shrines and dedications.
- What does Scripture say about who I am? In Christ you are “a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
- Has my walk with God grown cold? Prayerlessness and isolation make every struggle heavier.
Married women asking the same question about a husband can find helpful parallels in our article on signs of spiritual husband in a relationship, which focuses on patterns rather than accusation.

What to Do: Steps Toward Freedom in Christ
Freedom is not bought from a prophet or earned by fear. It is received through Jesus and walked out daily. These simple steps reflect what many ministers teach:
- Surrender to Christ afresh. Confess Jesus as Lord and invite the Holy Spirit to fill every part of your life.
- Repent and close known doors. Confess sexual sin, cut off pornography, and get rid of charms or items linked to occult practice.
- Renounce every ungodly covenant. Speak it aloud: you belong to Christ, and to your earthly wife or future wife alone.
- Stand on the finished work of the cross. Christ blotted out “the handwriting of ordinances that was against us… nailing it to his cross” (Colossians 2:14–15).
- Build daily habits. Scripture reading, worship, accountability with a trusted brother, and healthy sleep.
- Pray together if married. “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). Invite your wife into the journey.

A Prayer Against Spiritual Wife (Pray Aloud)
Heavenly Father, I come to You in the name of Jesus Christ. Thank You that I am bought with a price and my body is the temple of the Holy Ghost. I confess my sins, including every sexual sin and every door I have opened knowingly or unknowingly. Wash me in the blood of Jesus and create in me a clean heart, O God.
In the name of Jesus, I renounce every spiritual marriage, covenant, ring, gift or dedication made with any spirit, through my actions or through my family line. I declare that I am joined to the Lord and I am one spirit with Him. I belong to Jesus, and in marriage I belong to my wife alone.
Lord, restore my peace, my dreams, my desire for godly love and my ability to build a lasting home. Bless my marriage, or prepare me for the wife You have for me. Give me sweet sleep and guard my mind through Christ Jesus. Whom the Son sets free is free indeed. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Short Prayer Points for Daily Use
- “Lord, I submit myself to You; I resist the devil and he must flee” (James 4:7).
- “Every covenant against my marriage is cancelled by the blood of Jesus.”
- “Holy Spirit, purify my dreams and guard my sleep tonight” (Psalm 4:8).
- “Father, renew my love and tenderness toward my wife” (Ephesians 5:25).
- “I stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ has made me free” (Galatians 5:1).

Wisdom, Health and Safety
Spiritual warfare is real, but so are bodies, minds and relationships. Please hold both together:
- See a doctor for sleep paralysis, ongoing exhaustion, low desire, erectile difficulties or fertility concerns.
- Speak to a counsellor if past abuse, trauma or pornography addiction is part of the picture. The APA offers practical guidance on building healthy relationships.
- Get urgent help if you ever feel hopeless or have thoughts of harming yourself: contact a mental-health professional or emergency service straight away.
- Never blame your wife or partner for a “spirit”. Love, patience and honest conversation protect a home.
Beware of Exploitative “Deliverance”
Sadly, some people exploit this fear. Be very careful with anyone who demands money or “seed” before praying, sells special soaps, oils or rings as guaranteed cures, asks you to bathe at a river or shrine, asks for underwear, hair or nails, or asks anyone to undress for prayer. Walk away from guaranteed results. Jesus said, “freely ye have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8).
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the signs of spiritual wife in a man?
Commonly described signs include recurring dreams of marriage or intimacy, relationships that collapse near commitment, a marriage that suddenly turns cold, water dreams, and a family pattern of broken marriages. These are patterns to pray about, not proof, and medical causes should always be checked.
Can a spiritual wife stop a man from getting married?
Many ministers teach that spiritual wives resist marriage, and some men do notice repeated broken engagements. Scripture also reminds us that “whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD” (Proverbs 18:22). Keep praying, grow in character, and seek wise counsel; delay has many causes.
What is the difference between a spiritual wife and a spiritual husband?
They are understood as the same kind of spirit. A spiritual husband is said to trouble women, and a spiritual wife to trouble men. Read our pillar guide on what a spiritual spouse is for a full comparison.
Can a man be free from a spiritual wife?
Yes. Believers find freedom through repentance, renouncing ungodly covenants and standing in Christ’s finished work. Freedom is often a journey of daily faithfulness, not a single dramatic moment, and no one can honestly guarantee a timeline.
My husband has these signs. What should I do?
Pray for him privately, speak with love rather than accusation, and encourage him to see a doctor for any health issues. If he is willing, pray together and seek a trusted pastor or Christian counsellor.
Final Encouragement
Whether you are a man asking for yourself or a woman praying for a man you love, you are not cursed or forgotten. The signs of spiritual wife describe struggles many believers face, but they do not have the final word. Christ does. Bring every dream, every pattern and every fear to Him, take sensible practical steps, and stand fast in the freedom He has already won.
