Maybe the silence in your home has grown heavy. Maybe there has been betrayal, a separation, or years of quarrels that slowly cooled your love. Whatever brought you here, you are not the first believer to cry out to God for a broken marriage, and you are not alone. A prayer for marriage restoration is one of the most common prayers among Christian women and men in Nigeria, Ghana and across the diaspora, and the Bible gives us real hope to stand on. This guide shares what Scripture says about restoring a marriage, the KJV Bible verses believers pray, 21 prayer points, a 7-day prayer plan, and the practical steps and safeguards that must go hand in hand with prayer.

One word of love before we begin: restoration is God’s work in two willing hearts. Prayer invites God to heal; it never gives us power to force another person, and it never asks you to stay in danger. Hold on to that as you read.

What Does the Bible Say About Marriage Restoration?

Marriage was God’s idea from the very beginning. Jesus said, “Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Matthew 19:6). Because God designed marriage, He cares deeply when it is wounded, and He is able to heal what people cannot.

The great restoration promise of the prophet Joel speaks to every season of loss: “And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm” (Joel 2:25). Many wives and husbands hold on to this verse when it feels like years of their marriage have been eaten away by conflict, distance or betrayal.

God’s heart for broken things

The Bible is full of a God who mends. “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3). “The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit” (Psalm 34:18). Whatever happens in your marriage, God is close to your pain and will not leave you without comfort.

A picture of restoration in Hosea

The book of Hosea tells the story of a husband who kept loving an unfaithful wife, as a picture of God’s faithful love for His people. God says, “I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her. And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope” (Hosea 2:14-15). The “valley of Achor” means the valley of trouble. God can turn your valley of trouble into a door of hope.

God gives new hearts

Many marriages are not broken by one big event but by hardened hearts. God’s promise is personal: “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 36:26). Pray this for your spouse, but pray it first for yourself.

Before You Pray: Honest Truths About Restoration

Prayer is powerful, and it works best when it is grounded in truth. These are the gentle truths every believer praying for restoration needs to hear:

  • God restores, but He does not override free will. You can pray for your spouse’s heart, but you cannot control it. Be wary of any prayer, ritual or “prophet” that promises to make someone love you or come back by force. Controlling another person through spiritual means is manipulation, and our guide on prayer against witchcraft explains why believers reject it.
  • Restoration usually begins with you. Jesus asks us to deal with our own hearts first (Matthew 7:3-5). Ask God to show you your part, without carrying blame that is not yours.
  • Safety comes before reconciliation. If you or your children are being hit, threatened, controlled or abused, restoration is not your first priority; safety is. “A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself” (Proverbs 22:3). God never asks anyone to remain in danger.
  • Forgiveness is not the same as trust. You can forgive quickly in your heart while trust is rebuilt slowly through changed behaviour. Both are biblical.
  • Restoration takes time. A marriage that took years to break down rarely heals in a weekend. Many couples find healing comes over months of prayer, honest conversation and wise counsel.
  • Not every problem is spiritual. Money stress, poor communication, health problems, depression, in-law pressure and unhealed childhood wounds affect many marriages. These need practical help as well as prayer.

Common Situations Believers Pray About

Every marriage story is different. These are some of the seasons in which people search for a prayer for restoration of marriage:

  1. Constant quarrels and coldness. You live under the same roof but feel like strangers. Pray for softened hearts and learn new ways to speak (Proverbs 15:1).
  2. Separation. One spouse has moved out or asked for space. Pray, keep your words gentle, and avoid pressure or threats. Give God room to work.
  3. After adultery. Betrayal cuts deep. Healing after infidelity usually needs repentance from the one who strayed, honest accountability, time, and often a counsellor. Some believers also pray to close the spiritual doors that sexual sin can open, which is the focus of Unholy Covenants, and to break unhealthy emotional ties as explained in how to break soul ties.
  4. After divorce. Some couples do remarry each other; others do not. Pray for God’s will, for peace between you, and for your children. Scripture also says that if an unbelieving spouse leaves, “A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace” (1 Corinthians 7:15). Seek pastoral and legal advice before making decisions.
  5. Repeated patterns. Some believers notice the same breakdowns happening again and again in their family or relationships, sometimes alongside troubling dreams. Many ministers connect such patterns with a spiritual spouse; our guide to signs of spiritual husband in a relationship explains this calmly, without fear.
  6. Distance from God. When one or both spouses drift from prayer and church, the marriage often drifts too. “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it” (Psalm 127:1).

How to Pray for Your Marriage to Be Restored: 7 Steps

  1. Surrender your marriage to God. Tell Him honestly how you feel: the hurt, anger, fear and hope. He can handle your honesty. Then place your spouse and your future in His hands.
  2. Search your own heart. Ask, “Lord, show me where I have contributed to this pain.” Repent where you need to, and receive His forgiveness (1 John 1:9).
  3. Forgive, and keep forgiving. “And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any” (Mark 11:25). Forgiveness releases your heart even before your spouse changes.
  4. Pray Scripture over your spouse. Use the verses below. Bless your spouse in prayer instead of listing their faults to God.
  5. Change how you speak. “Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” (James 1:19). A soft answer, a listening ear and a kind word can begin to thaw a cold home.
  6. Get wise help together, or alone. A trusted pastor or Christian marriage counsellor can guide you both. If your spouse refuses, go yourself. The American Psychological Association also shares practical research on healthy relationships.
  7. Wait with hope, and live well while you wait. Keep praying, keep caring for your health and your children, and stay connected to believers who support you.

Bible Verses for Marriage Restoration (KJV)

Speak these verses aloud as you pray. Write one on a card and keep it where you will see it each day.

  • “And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten” (Joel 2:25).
  • “What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Matthew 19:6).
  • “And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:12).
  • “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it” (Psalm 127:1).
  • “Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up … Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things” (1 Corinthians 13:4, 7).
  • “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:31-32).
  • “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness” (Colossians 3:13-14).
  • “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger” (Proverbs 15:1).
  • “Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth” (Isaiah 43:18-19).
  • “Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27).
  • “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
  • “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled” (Hebrews 13:4).

Verses for husbands and wives

Scripture speaks to both spouses. To husbands: “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it” (Ephesians 5:25), and “dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife … as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered” (1 Peter 3:7). Of the godly wife: “The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her … She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life” (Proverbs 31:11-12), and “Every wise woman buildeth her house” (Proverbs 14:1). These verses describe mutual love and honour; they never excuse abuse from either side.

21 Prayer Points for Marriage Restoration

Pray these slowly. You do not need to pray all 21 at once; choose three or four each day and pray them from your heart.

Surrender and repentance

  1. Father, I bring my marriage to You. I confess that I cannot fix it on my own. Except You build this house, we labour in vain (Psalm 127:1).
  2. Lord, search my heart. Show me where I have hurt my spouse with my words, attitude or actions, and give me grace to repent (Psalm 139:23-24).
  3. Forgive me for every bitterness, wrath and evil speaking I have allowed in our home. Make me kind and tenderhearted (Ephesians 4:31-32).

Healing and forgiveness

  1. Lord Jesus, heal the wounds in my heart and in my spouse’s heart. Bind up every hurt we have caused each other (Psalm 147:3).
  2. I choose to forgive my spouse as Christ forgave me. Help me release every offence I am holding (Colossians 3:13).
  3. Heal the memories that keep replaying. Help us not to dwell on former things, and do a new thing in our marriage (Isaiah 43:18-19).
  4. Where trust has been broken, Lord, rebuild it step by step through truth and changed lives.

Your spouse’s heart

  1. Father, I pray for my husband (or wife). Draw them close to You. Speak comfortably to their heart (Hosea 2:14).
  2. Take away every stony heart in our home and give us hearts of flesh (Ezekiel 36:26).
  3. I bless my spouse in Jesus’ name. Give them peace, wisdom, good health and the joy of Your salvation.
  4. Lord, I release my spouse to You. I will not try to control or manipulate them. Have Your way in their life and mine.

Communication and unity

  1. Set a watch over my mouth, O Lord. Teach me to give a soft answer that turns away wrath (Proverbs 15:1; Psalm 141:3).
  2. Make us swift to hear, slow to speak and slow to wrath with each other (James 1:19).
  3. Be the third strand in our cord, Lord. Make our marriage a threefold cord that is not quickly broken (Ecclesiastes 4:12).
  4. Teach us to pray together again, as heirs together of the grace of life (1 Peter 3:7).

Protection of the marriage

  1. Lord, I ask You to protect our marriage from every outside influence that seeks to divide us: ungodly friends, harmful advice and unhealthy ties.
  2. Keep our marriage bed undefiled and our hearts faithful to each other (Hebrews 13:4).
  3. Father, in the name of Jesus, I reject every spiritual pattern of breakdown that has followed my family. Let it end with this generation (Galatians 3:13).

Restoration and hope

  1. Lord, restore to us the years that the locust has eaten: the joy, peace and love we have lost (Joel 2:25).
  2. Turn our valley of trouble into a door of hope (Hosea 2:15). Let our story bring glory to Your name.
  3. Father, nothing is too hard for You (Jeremiah 32:27). I trust You with the outcome, and I choose to rest in Your love whatever happens. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A 7-Day Prayer Plan for Marriage Restoration

If you want structure, use this simple plan. Pray for 15 to 30 minutes each day, ideally at the same time.

  • Day 1, Surrender: Read Psalm 127. Pray points 1 to 3. Write down what you are handing to God.
  • Day 2, Forgiveness: Read Colossians 3:12-17. Pray points 4 to 7. Name each hurt before God and choose to forgive.
  • Day 3, Your spouse: Read Ezekiel 36:25-27. Pray points 8 to 11. Write a prayer of blessing for your spouse.
  • Day 4, Words: Read James 1:19-26. Pray points 12 and 13. Ask God to show you one change in how you speak.
  • Day 5, Unity: Read Ecclesiastes 4:9-12. Pray points 14 and 15. If it is safe and welcome, do one kind thing for your spouse.
  • Day 6, Protection: Read Ephesians 6:10-18. Pray points 16 to 18. Some believers add a quiet night of prayer, as described in our midnight prayer points.
  • Day 7, Hope: Read Joel 2:21-27. Pray points 19 to 21. Thank God for every small sign of change, and decide what you will keep doing next week.

A Short Prayer for Marriage Restoration

Heavenly Father, You are the God who restores. I bring my marriage before You with all its pain and all its hope. Forgive me where I have failed, and help me forgive as You have forgiven me. Heal our hearts, soften what has become hard, and teach us to love each other with patience and kindness. Protect our home, our children and our future. Where there has been distance, bring us close; where there has been silence, give us gentle words. I trust You with my spouse and with the outcome, and I rest in Your love. Restore what the locust has eaten, and make our valley of trouble a door of hope. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

When to Seek Help

Prayer and practical help work together. Please reach out for support when:

  • There is violence, threats or control. If your spouse hurts, threatens, isolates or controls you, put your safety and your children’s safety first. Tell someone you trust, and contact local domestic-abuse services or the police. The NHS has clear guidance on getting help for domestic violence and abuse. Leaving danger is not a lack of faith.
  • You need a counsellor. A Christian marriage counsellor can help you communicate, heal from betrayal and decide wise next steps, whether your spouse comes or not.
  • Your health is affected. Sleeplessness, panic, weight loss or physical symptoms need a doctor. After infidelity, a medical check-up is wise for your own protection.
  • You feel hopeless. If you are thinking of harming yourself, please contact a doctor, a mental-health helpline or emergency services today. Your life is precious to God.
  • You face legal questions. Separation, divorce, property and child custody issues need proper legal advice alongside prayer.

Beware of Harmful “Marriage Restoration” Practices

Desperate hearts are easy targets. Jesus said, “freely ye have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8). Be very careful of anyone who:

  • Demands money, “seed” payments or expensive items before they will pray for your marriage.
  • Promises your spouse will return by a set date, or guarantees results.
  • Gives you charms, powders, oils or “love potions” to put in your spouse’s food or clothes.
  • Tells you to bathe in a river, visit a shrine, undress or perform secret rituals.
  • Names a relative, in-law or co-worker as the “witch” behind your marriage problems.
  • Tells you to stay with a spouse who is beating or endangering you, or to keep abuse secret.

True ministry points you to Jesus, respects your dignity and your safety, and never puts a price on prayer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most powerful prayer for marriage restoration?

There is no magic formula. The most powerful prayer is a sincere one from a surrendered heart, built on Scripture such as Joel 2:25, Ezekiel 36:26 and Ecclesiastes 4:12. Pray with humility, forgive, and pair your prayers with changed words and wise counsel.

What Bible verse is good for marriage restoration?

Many believers stand on Joel 2:25 (“I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten”), Matthew 19:6, Ecclesiastes 4:12, Isaiah 43:18-19, Hosea 2:14-15 and 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. These verses point to God as the One who heals and renews.

Can God restore a marriage after adultery?

Many couples testify that God has healed their marriage after infidelity, but healing usually needs genuine repentance, honesty, time and often counselling. The betrayed spouse is not obliged to pretend nothing happened, and rebuilding trust is a process. Pray for God’s will and seek mature help.

Can God restore my marriage if my spouse does not want it?

God can speak to any heart, and you can keep praying for your spouse. But God does not force anyone’s will, and you cannot either. Pray, become the person God is calling you to be, and trust Him with the outcome, whatever it is.

How long does marriage restoration take?

There is no fixed timeline. Some couples see change within weeks; for others it takes months or years. Be wary of anyone who promises restoration by a certain date. Keep praying, keep growing, and take one day at a time.

Should I stay in my marriage if I am being abused?

Your safety and your children’s safety come first. God does not require anyone to stay in danger. Reach out to someone you trust, contact domestic-abuse services or the police, and seek counsel from wise church leaders who will protect you. Restoration, if it comes, can only happen when the abuse has stopped and real change has been proven.

Final Encouragement

Dear sister or brother, your marriage matters to God, and so do you. Whether your spouse is sleeping beside you in silence or living far away, the Lord sees your tears. Keep bringing your marriage to Him, keep your own heart soft, and take wise practical steps. Many believers find that as they pray, God begins His work in their own hearts first, and that is never wasted.
